Hey y’all, Tiffany here.
When I was a kid, I loved moving. There was something about starting over again in a new home and new school that just gave me a thrill.
Once, when I was 11, my parents told me we were going to build a new house. I went upstairs and boxed up all of my things that day.
Then they told me that it takes at least three months to build a house – whoops!
I had lived in three different states by the time I was four years old, and I’ve lost track of the number of times I moved after that. I’m not from a military family, but the company my father worked for did contract work for the government.
As I’ve gotten older, moving doesn’t have quite the joy it used to. Maybe being a parent and being responsible for packing the entire house has something to do with that.
Even still, Phillip and I have been married for 7 years, and we’ve lived in six homes in that time. I’m hoping that where we’re at right now is where we’ll stay for a long time.
In our first 5 months of marriage, the only job Phillip could find was as a mover for a moving company. He was extremely frustrated by that at the time, but now he can pack boxes and load moving trucks like a pro!
It’s definitely come in handy, and it’s just one more evidence that God knows what He is doing better than we do.
With all of our moves, I want to share some of our top tips for moving. (And no, making a ton of money and paying for someone else to do it is not one of them!)
1 – Pack for your new home
The first few times we moved, I made the mistake of packing our things based on what rooms they were in. Unfortunately, that rarely matched up with where we were moving to!
Now, each time we move, I label the boxes
2 – Give yourself plenty of time
While I wouldn’t recommend packing up your entire bedroom before you’ve even started building your new house, I do recommend giving yourself plenty of time to pack things. Otherwise, you might end up throwing in a casserole dish that hadn’t been properly washed – true story!
It helps to organize and pack the items that you aren’t going to be using anytime soon. I even buy a bunch of paper plates and plastic utensils to use the last week or two that we live in a home so that the dishes can be packed carefully, without rush.
3 – Get free moving boxes
Neighborhood facebook groups and websites like Nextdoor are full of posts from people who have recently moved and are leaving their old moving boxes out on the porch for people to grab!
You can also go to your local liquor store and ask for their boxes – they are usually pretty sturdy!
One last tip….
Moving is the perfect time to replace all of the basics! When you move into a new home, it’s a good idea to go through and replace items like fire alarm batteries and air filters.
Air filters are actually something that most people forget to change, even in their own home when they’re not moving!
Luckily, Sam’s Club has great low prices for their members on items that are useful for people who’ve recently moved, like 3M Filtrete air filters.
3M Filtrete filters are $8 off now through November 25th with Sam’s Club Instant Savings!
